To address this issue, Fung asserts that employers and educators must adopt approaches based on the strengths of neurodiverse individuals instead of their \u201cdisabilities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Strengths-Based Model of Neurodiversity <\/span><b>(21:55) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employs four main components <\/span><b>(24:18)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Positive Psychology<\/span><\/i> <b>(25:04) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focused on individual strength, satisfaction, and growth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Positive Psychiatry <\/span><\/i><b>(26:11) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implementing long-term solutions based on strengths, well-being, and growth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardner\u2019s Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI)<\/span><\/i> <b>(5:42) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tests for musical-rhythmic intelligence, inter\/intrapersonal intelligence, etc. and serves as a more inclusive and holistic test for intelligence than IQ.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chickering\u2019s Seven Vectors of Development<\/span><\/i> <b>(27:25) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development goals based on self-awareness and interdependence<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These strengths-based elements allow for the growth and development of neurodivergent traits, which, when given proper support, may provide a \u201ccompetitive advantage.\u201d <\/span><b>(13:19). <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, (according to the presenter) many neurodivergent individuals have changed the course of history, like Alan Turing <\/span><b>(13:22)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Temple Grandin, Charles Darwin, and Andy Warhol, to name a few.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford University has implemented support initiatives based on the Strengths-Based Model. They aim to support neurodiverse students during their higher education and their transition to employment and independent living. Their Neurodiversity Student Support Program (NSSP) <\/span><b>(33:53) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has seen great success already, with a jump from 5 to 17 student participants in one year, despite the pandemic. He is the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/neurodiversity.html\">Stanford Neurodiversity Project<\/a>, which strives to uncover the strengths of neurodiverse individuals and utilize their talents to increase innovation and productivity of the society as a whole. He directs the Neurodiverse Student Support Program, Neurodiversity at Work Program (recently funded by Autism Speaks), and Adult Neurodevelopment Clinic at Stanford. Dr. Fung is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. His lab advances the understanding of neural bases of human socio-communicative and cognitive functions by using novel neuroimaging and technologies.
