These behaviors, just like any other, are learned through association, modeling, and observation <\/span><b>(5:13)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are adapted to serve a specific purpose or function <\/span><b>(6:49)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because communication difficulties are a core symptom of autism, challenging behaviors are generally understood as functions of communication in individuals with autism <\/span><b>(13:14)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, as with all behaviors, they can be modified with positive supports <\/span><b>(6:35)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand and treat these behaviors, it is essential to remember that they \u201cdo not occur in a vacuum\u201d <\/span><b>(7:45) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but instead depend on context and environmental surroundings (i.e. social settings, physical discomfort, etc.). The presenter gives a framework showing the context leading up to behaviors and subsequent consequences <\/span><b>(16:15)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Viewing challenging behaviors through this lens provides clinicians and families with four different levels where intervention can take place <\/span><b>(20:13)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting events <\/span><b>(17:38) &#8211;\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBroad contextual factor that makes an antecedent more or less likely to trigger a certain behavior\u201d (i.e., social, physical, or mental settings)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antecedents &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything which can potentially trigger a specific behavior (i.e. demands)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequences<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) are conducted to determine context (setting events + antecedents) and function of an individual\u2019s behavior <\/span><b>(21:30)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. FBAs generally include interviews <\/span><b>(25:13)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, direct observation <\/span><b>(36:24)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, checklists and questionnaires <\/span><b>(43:40)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and functional analysis (experiment to verify the function of behavior) <\/span><b>(22:02)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
