As a result, many young children exhibiting early signs of autism are receiving referrals for appropriate assessment. Those children who eventually receive an autism diagnosis are often prescribed speech and behavior therapy, medical guidance, and other supports that can improve their quality of life and their <a href=\"https:\/\/autism.org\/autism-prognosis\/\">prognosis<\/a>. Research has shown that intervening as early as possible is associated with more positive outcomes than treatment later in life or not at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Is Autism Screening?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism screening is usually administered by a pediatrician during a routine well-child checkup. The doctor may observe the child or ask you questions about his or her behaviors at home and while interacting with other children on the playground. The purpose of an autism screening is to identify <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common early <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/autism\/signs-symptoms\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/autism\/signs.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of autism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The following are early signs of autism, however, they do not necessarily need to be present.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delays in communicating with others including speech and gestures\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not responding to one\u2019s own name<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting upset over minor changes in routine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding many, if not most, forms of physical contact<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Showing little interest in objects or people<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests that autism screenings should be part of standard 18 and 24-month well-child checkups, whereas the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 (NCBDD) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/autism\/screening.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that all children be screened at 9, 18, and 24 or 30 months.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screenings administered during well-child checkups are only designed to indicate whether a child <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing some early signs of autism. These screenings identify areas requiring further assessment and do not replace a formal diagnosis. Although many doctors follow the AAP and NCBDD guidelines, parents should also be proactive. If you suspect your child may have autism,\u00a0 please ask your child\u2019s pediatrician to administer screening or request a referral to a qualified specialist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Autism Screening Tools<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physicians use an array of formal and informal autism screening tools. These can range from simple observations to formal assessments. Some of the more commonly used autism screening tools are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/m-chat.org\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers<\/a>, Revised (M-CHAT), is a popular 20-question test designed for toddlers between 16 and 30 months old. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/09\/190927074921.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent evidence<\/a> that the M-CHAT may not be as effective in screening females and <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minority, urban and low-income children<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agesandstages.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Ages and Stages Questionnaire<\/a> (ASQ) is a general developmental screening tool that examines developmental challenges at specific ages.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stat.vueinnovations.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers and Young Children<\/a> (STAT) is an interactive screening tool comprising of twelve activities that assess play, communication, and imitation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pedstest.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parents\u2019 Evaluation of Developmental Status<\/a> (PEDS) is a general developmental parent interview designed to identify delays in motor, language, self-help, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the results of an autism screening indicate that your child shows some signs of autism, your pediatrician will likely refer you to a specialist for a formal evaluation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Getting An Autism Diagnosis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only a specialist can make an official diagnosis of autism There are two important reasons to obtain a formal diagnosis for your child. First, your child may be eligible for support and resources from government and insurance agencies. Second, there are other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/autism.org\/related-disorders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">related conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are also associated with autism, but involve different treatments, such as Sensory Processing Disorder as well as Fragile X, Landau-Kleffner, and Rett\u2019s syndromes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An autism diagnosis is usually based on the criteria described in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is published by the American Psychiatric Association and used by most healthcare professionals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DSM-5 recognizes two broad diagnostic criteria for autism:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interest, or activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These symptoms often appear early in life and can disrupt the child\u2019s social, emotional, and cognitive development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a diagnosis of autism, a specialist will coordinate a healthcare team to assess and recommend treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ongoing Assessment For Autism<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your child\u2019s school district and\/or clinician may perform a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrightslaw.com\/info\/discipl.fab.starin.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Functional Behavioral Assessment. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This evaluation seeks to determine causes for specific, often challenging, behaviors. Based primarily on observations in various settings, strategic intervention(s) are developed to address these behaviors. Other assessments may include interviews with parents and teachers and completing behavioral and sensory rating scales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is recommended that families, educators, and pediatricians track their child\u2019s progress over time.
