Traci Sutton, MS, CCC-SLP, discusses the use of technology and mobile applications to support communication, social skills, and independence in autistic individuals. She emphasizes technology as a highly effective tool that leverages the visual learning strengths and restricted interests often found in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The speaker details her practical use and specific recommendations for various applications across developmental levels. This includes apps for Language and Vocabulary (e.g., Video Touch for concept expansion), Social Skills and Inferencing (e.g., Between the Lines and Digital Problem Solver for perspective-taking and problem-solving), Independence and Daily Living (e.g., Kid Weather for appropriate dress and Popplet visual organizers for academic tasks). Sutton repeatedly emphasizes the need for technology use to be carefully tailored to individual needs, addressing the challenge of limiting screen time to prevent fixation or aggressive behavior. She summarizes the presentation and underscores the importance of focusing on skill generalization—ensuring the capabilities learned on the device translate into functional communication and increased independence in everyday life—before addressing the Q&A.
